“Sometimes love lasts more than a lifetime.” That’s the tagline for this book and wouldn’t it be amazing if it were true? What if every time we died, we were reincarnated and got to start another life? Many people already believe this. I believe it. But, what if when we were reincarnated, we had all the memories of our past lives? What if we knew who were were in our past lives? What if we fell in love with a person in our first lives and remained in love with that same person for all of our lives? Now that gives a new meaning to soul mates!
Ann Brashares, author of The Traveling Pants series, is back with a great story. Her novel, My Name is Memory, explores the idea of reincarnation. Daniel was born in early 500 AD and in 542 AD, he sees a girl and instantly falls in love. During another lifetime, he learns her name is Sophia. Over thousands of years, and countless lives, Daniel searches for Sophia and always seems to find her. She never looks the same, her name is never again Sophia, but he can always recognize her soul. In every lifetime, he tries to make their love work, but there are always obstacles standing in their way. In 1918, she’s a nurse aiding him, a wounded soldier, but their love ends quickly. In the 70s, he meets her again, but he’s only a teenager and she’s an elderly woman at the end of her life.
Finally, in 2004, Daniel meets Lucy, his Sophia, in a high school in the States. They’re finally the same age. This is finally their chance to be together as they’re destined to be over their entire history.
I’ll admit, I was skeptical when I first started reading this novel. I like weird sci-fi type novels, but I wasn’t sure how well it would work with a love story, but it worked really well. Once I started reading My Name is Memory, I couldn’t put it down. The story, although a little out there, might not be an impossible one. It’s a beautiful story of two people who are, through all of time, meant for each other.
So what if soul mates are real and in every one of our lives, we are meant to be with one specific person? What if love does last more than a lifetime?
