“The Last Summer (of You & Me)” by Ann Brashares

I read The Last Summer (of You & Me) overnight and although I liked it, I didn’t love it. Ann Brashares is the author of the famous Traveling Pants series. This novel is one that’s aimed more at adults … I guess you can say young adults because the main characters are all in their early twenties.

The story is about two sisters, Riley who is 24 and Alice who is 21. They grew up in New York City, but have a summer home in New Jersey. This is where they met and grew up with their friend Paul, also 24.

This summer, the girls spend time at their beach house in New Jersey with Paul, but this time, things change. Paul and Riley have always been closer friends than Paul and Alice. This is the first summer Paul and Alice admit their feelings for each other.

But, things change again. Riley falls ill and asks Alice not to say anything to Paul. This changes the dynamic between Alice and Paul. While Riley continues to battle her illness over the next year, Alice takes care of her sister and suffers from heartache.

I liked this novel because the story felt real, but Riley’s reactions to her illness and forcing Alice to keep secrets from Paul made me angry. I felt like Riley’s selfishness was excessive for the most part. In the end, I did enjoy the novel as a whole so if you’re a Brashares fan, grab a copy and happy reading! 🙂
